BAUCHI SOUTH AT A CROSSROADS: ALLEGATIONS, SILENCE AND THE IMPERATIVE OF TRUTH
This week, Bauchi State has once again been thrown into a vortex of political controversy, public anxiety and grave security concerns following a viral video interview involving a man identified as Hassan and the popular social-media personality known as De English Alhaji.
The interview, which has travelled with astonishing velocity across social-media platforms, contains allegations of an exceptionally serious nature against the Distinguished Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Buba Umar.
Let us be unequivocally clear from the outset: an allegation is not a conviction, a viral video is not a judicial verdict, and public outrage is not a substitute for evidence.
Yet, allegations of terrorism, banditry or complicity in violent criminality are far too consequential to be casually dismissed as ordinary political gossip.
According to recent media reports, Hassan made several allegations during the recorded interview concerning Senator Shehu Buba Umar. The claims have generated widespread public attention and intense debate. However, some reports have also emphasised that the allegations have not been independently verified and that there is presently no publicly established court judgment declaring Senator Shehu Buba Umar guilty of sponsoring terrorism or banditry.
THE QUESTIONS BAUCHI SOUTH DESERVES TO ASK
The fundamental question confronting the people of Bauchi South is not whether the Senator's supporters are loud enough to defend him, nor whether his political opponents are eager enough to destroy him.
The fundamental question is:
Where does the truth lie?
Is Senator Shehu Buba Umar truly an accomplice to terrorism or banditry, as alleged by Hassan?
Or are these allegations another manifestation of political calumny, orchestrated misinformation and electoral warfare ahead of the 2027 governorship election?
These questions cannot be resolved through Facebook arguments, WhatsApp propaganda, partisan invectives or emotional grandstanding.
They require evidence.
They require investigation.
They require institutional courage.
And above all, they require an investigation so transparent, rigorous and unimpeachable that its conclusion will withstand political manipulation from every direction.
The allegations against Senator Buba are not entirely emerging in a vacuum. Similar accusations have surfaced publicly in previous years, including petitions and political controversies surrounding alleged links to banditry. Senator Buba has repeatedly denied such allegations, describing previous accusations as baseless, fabricated and politically motivated.
Supporters and political groups have similarly argued that accusations against him are part of a calculated campaign of political blackmail intended to weaken his political influence and aspirations ahead of 2027.
There have also been investigations and fact-checking reports questioning the authenticity and interpretation of earlier viral videos associated with allegations against the Senator. One recent fact-check found no credible evidence establishing that certain individuals shown in a viral video were bandit kingpins, raising serious concerns about the possibility of misinformation and manipulated narratives.
BUT SILENCE IS NOT A STRATEGY
Nevertheless, the emergence of fresh allegations from someone claiming personal proximity to the Senator introduces a different dimension to the controversy.
Whether Hassan is telling the truth or fabricating an elaborate falsehood is precisely what competent investigators must determine.
His credibility must be examined.
His relationship with the Senator must be independently established.
His claims must be subjected to forensic interrogation.
Every individual mentioned must be identified.
Every alleged location must be investigated.
Every alleged transaction must be traced.
Every alleged communication must be authenticated.
Every purported witness must be interviewed.
And every piece of digital evidence must undergo professional forensic examination.
This is not a matter for speculation; it is a matter for substantiation.
A distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria cannot be convicted by social media. But neither should allegations involving terrorism and national security be swept beneath the carpet merely because the individual concerned occupies a powerful political office.
Public office should never become an armour against legitimate investigation.
At the same time, political rivalry must never become a licence for character assassination.
CAN SENATOR SHEHU BUBA UMAR EXONERATE HIMSELF?
Yes.
Absolutely.
And the most honourable path is not necessarily anger, threats or partisan mobilisation.
The strongest possible response would be voluntary transparency.
Senator Shehu Buba Umar can publicly welcome an independent investigation.
He can invite the relevant security agencies to examine every allegation without interference.
He can encourage the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and other competent security institutions to establish the facts.
He can demand that Hassan be questioned under lawful procedures and that any evidence presented be subjected to forensic scrutiny.
If the allegations are false, a comprehensive and credible investigation could provide the most powerful vindication possible.
If there is evidence of wrongdoing, then the law must take its course irrespective of political status.
That is the essence of constitutional democracy.
That is the meaning of equality before the law.
CAN NIGERIANS TRUST THE SECURITY INSTITUTIONS?
This may be the most uncomfortable question of all.
Can Nigerians genuinely trust their security institutions to investigate allegations involving politically powerful personalities?
The answer must not be determined by cynicism or blind faith.
It must be determined by institutional performance.
The security agencies now have an opportunity to demonstrate that Nigeria's national-security architecture is not selective, timid or susceptible to political influence.
If the allegations are false, the Senator deserves a clear and authoritative exoneration.
If they are true, the country deserves prosecution based on credible evidence and due process.
Anything less will deepen public suspicion.
Anything less will create room for conspiracy theories.
Anything less will further corrode public confidence in institutions already struggling with the enormous burden of insecurity.
Previous public controversies surrounding Senator Buba have produced competing narratives, including demands for investigations and strong denials from the Senator and his supporters. Public reporting has also indicated that previous accusations became the subject of political and legal controversies.
BAUCHI SOUTH MUST NOT BECOME A BATTLEFIELD OF PROPAGANDA
As constituents, we must resist the temptation of becoming foot soldiers of propaganda.
The Senator's supporters must not assume that every allegation is automatically false simply because it comes at a politically sensitive moment.
Likewise, his opponents must not assume that an allegation automatically amounts to guilt simply because they desire his political downfall.
We must reject both intellectual dishonesty and political hysteria.
The people of Bauchi South deserve neither a witch-hunt nor a whitewash.
We deserve the truth.
Unvarnished.
Uncompromised.
Uncontaminated by partisan interests.
The sanctity of the Senate seat demands nothing less.
The reputation of Bauchi South demands nothing less.
And the security of Nigeria demands absolutely nothing less.
THE FINAL WORD
The question is not whether Senator Shehu Buba Umar's head should be placed metaphorically on a political spike.
The question is whether Nigeria possesses the institutional rectitude to establish the truth.
If innocent, Senator Shehu Buba Umar deserves complete vindication and protection from malicious defamation.
If culpable, no political office, senatorial privilege or electoral ambition should provide sanctuary from justice.
That is why the relevant security agencies must rise above political pressure and conduct a thorough, professional, impartial and evidence-driven investigation.
Let Hassan's allegations be tested.
Let the Senator's response be heard.
Let the evidence be examined.
Let the institutions do their work.
And when the dust of propaganda finally settles, let neither political convenience nor public hysteria determine the outcome.
Let the truth speak.
Because Bauchi South is watching.
Nigeria is watching.
And history will ultimately remember not who shouted the loudest, but whether justice and truth prevailed.
